REA’s February Vintage Sports Card Auction Makes History

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) recently made waves in the sports collectibles market with its February auction, amassing over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show was a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card that fetched an impressive $75,000, establishing a new benchmark for this sought-after vintage card.

Not stopping at the Wagner card, the auction showcased a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same series, graded PSA GOOD 2, which set a record for its condition with a sale price of $15,000. The event drew in a crowd of registry builders and collectors, particularly drawn to the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, a #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight, commanding an impressive $19,200 – the highest price seen for a non-Hall of Famer card from this set in such mint condition.

Featuring a total of 2,732 items, REA displayed a diverse range of collectibles that captured the attention of bidders. Notable sales included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background graded PSA VG-EX 4, which sold for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig graded PSA EX-MT 6 that went for $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball graded PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set that fetched $12,000, among other coveted pieces.

Brian Dwyer, REA’s President, expressed his satisfaction with the auction’s success and the enthusiastic response from the collector community. He also hinted at exciting prospects for upcoming events, including the March and Spring Auctions, promising more thrilling opportunities for sports collectibles aficionados.

This record-breaking auction by REA not only reaffirms the enduring allure and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also signals a promising future for collectors and enthusiasts. With the next Encore event scheduled for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA remains at the forefront of the sports collectibles market, offering a vibrant platform for both seasoned collectors and newcomers to the hobby.
