Heritage Icons Photography Auction Unveils Signed Mikan Rookie Card Photo

Heritage Auctions has unveiled an enticing collection of autographed photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, appealing to sports card aficionados and collectors alike. Among the prized items up for bids is a captivating 1948 photo featuring basketball legend George Mikan, harmonizing with his iconic 1948 Bowman rookie card. This 8×10 Type 1 photo impeccably captures Mikan in action, embellished with his autograph in striking blue ink, and is projected to command bids exceeding $20,000.

The enchanting theme of signed vintage photos resonates throughout the auction, with notable pieces including a late 1940s photograph of Cleveland Browns icon Otto Graham. This image replicates the portrayal on Graham’s 1950 Bowman Football rookie card and showcases his signature, adding a personalized touch to the collectible. Similarly, a signed photo of Jackie Robinson from 1949 depicts the baseball legend receiving his Silver Bat in recognition of securing the National League batting title, a remarkable year that also saw him crowned MVP. This Type I photo, inscribed to “Jeff,” holds sentimental value for enthusiasts.

Another striking piece in the auction is a 1957 photo of Robinson, capturing the poignant moment of the baseball legend clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field upon announcing his retirement from the sport. The image provides a detailed glimpse into Robinson’s personal belongings, including his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, alongside two bats – one of which belonged to Gil Hodges. This poignant photograph is anticipated to command bids exceeding $10,000.

Additionally, a significant addition to the auction is a photo that served as the inspiration for Willie Mays’ renowned 1952 Topps card, complete with Mays’ signature adorning the front, believed to have been signed during the 1990s.

The comprehensive online catalog showcases over 150 vintage images, with some dating back over a century, offering a treasure trove of sports history captured through the lens. Noteworthy inclusions encompass a poignant photo from the 1919 World Series, depicting Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther exchanging a handshake before a fateful game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. This historical image, complete with its original paper caption and stamps on the back, is anticipated to initiate bidding at $8,000.

Further highlights within the auction catalog feature rookie photos of sports luminaries such as Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), alongside a diverse array of images paying homage to icons like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, among other pre-war sports legends.

Running until June 13, the auction offers an exclusive opportunity to procure a piece of sporting history encapsulated in captivating vintage photographs, providing collectors and enthusiasts alike with a chance to own a unique slice of sports heritage.
