Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction Showcases Rare Baseball Cards

Heritage Auctions is gearing up to stun the sports memorabilia world once again with its upcoming Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction on July 12-13. This highly anticipated event will showcase a wide array of rare and coveted baseball cards, promising a treasure trove of delights for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

One of the most notable pieces up for grabs is the mint-condition 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson card, a true gem that captures a pivotal moment in baseball history. Also on offer is the gem-mint Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card, a piece of basketball history that never fails to spark excitement among fans. Adding to the lineup is a gem-mint chrome rookie card signed by none other than a young Bryce Harper, making this auction a must-see for sports card aficionados.

The auction will also feature an assortment of sealed packs, boxes, and cases teeming with potential hidden gems, offering collectors the chance to uncover rare finds. Signed Shohei Ohtani cards and top-tier Ty Cobb tobacco cards further enhance the allure of this summer auction, which boasts an impressive collection of Hall of Fame treasures, including Babe Ruth’s iconic “Called Shot” jersey.

A standout highlight of the event is a collection of 1959 baseball cards that were once stapled to containers of Canadian cookies. These cards, incredibly rare with only 69 in PSA’s population report, include 37 cards in this auction. The roster showcases legendary players such as Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Yogi Berra, making them a true collector’s dream.

Despite the obscurity of the name Dad’s Cookies to many, the impact of their collaboration with Exhibits Supply Company on sports memorabilia cannot be understated. Joe Orlando, Heritage’s Executive Vice President in Sports, emphasizes the allure of these cards, stating that they excite even the most seasoned collector due to their rarity and historical significance.

Produced by Exhibits Supply Company, known for creating picture postcards distributed in arcades, the Dad’s Cookies cards were initially used as promotional items by Dad’s Cookies, stapled to bags and boxes of cookies in 1959. Each card featured a note from the company’s Scottish mascot, “Sandy,” encouraging kids to collect all 64 “autographed” pictures of “a BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL STAR.” The cards’ scarcity is attributed to their distribution method and the limited number of surviving examples.

The auction will also showcase two highly sought-after Ty Cobb T206 cards from the early 1900s, including the El Principe de Gales Ty Cobb and the American Beauty Portrait-Red Cobb. These cards are considered rare and valuable collectors’ items, with Orlando highlighting their significance to T206 enthusiasts looking to add these iconic pieces to their collections.

In addition to the vintage treasures on offer, the auction will feature sealed boxes and cases that hold the promise of uncovering hidden gems. From the 1970 Topps Baseball Wax Box to newer releases like the 2015 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Unopened Case and the 2020 Panini Flawless Football Factory Sealed Case, collectors can experience the thrill of potentially finding rare cards and valuable collectibles.

Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction is set to deliver an unforgettable experience for sports memorabilia enthusiasts, providing a unique opportunity to acquire some of the rarest and most valuable cards in existence. With a lineup that includes iconic pieces from baseball and basketball history, as well as hidden treasures waiting to be discovered, this auction is a must-attend event for collectors looking to add to their prized collections.
