The world of sports memorabilia and high-end cards continues to captivate collectors, with the August Elite Auction at Goldin showcasing some remarkable sales. Topping the list was a PSA 8 1984-85 Star Company Michael Jordan card, setting a new record for its grade at an impressive $244,000. The momentum for Jordan's first NBA licensed trading card was further evident as a PSA 7 version fetched $62,000 on eBay, with a PSA 6.5 also selling for $52,460.
Not to be outshone, a 1-of-1 2009 Bowman Sterling Red Refractor Autograph card of MLB star Mike Trout, graded PSA 9, commanded a staggering $192,030 despite Trout's recent injury struggles. Baseball fans also saw new records set for Bryce Harper and Mookie Betts, as their rare Red Refractor cards sold for $184,720 and $123,220, respectively.
The auction also featured unique SuperFractor cards, with standout sales including a 2024 Topps Chrome Autographed SuperFractor of Elly De La Cruz graded PSA 10 selling for $116,534 and a Jackson Holliday SuperFractor PSA 10 going for $68,527, setting new highs for these emerging players. Collectors were treated to a rare find in a dual autograph Ronaldo/Messi SuperFractor from 2023-24 Topps UEFA, which fetched $67,100 post PSA grading.
Memorabilia enthusiasts had their share of highlights as well, with Travis Kelce's 2020-21 Super Bowl LV jersey, linked to the Kansas City Chiefs' matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, commanding $52,460. In addition, Kelce's AFC Championship ring from the same season was sold for $34,404. Noteworthy sales also included a jersey from Aaron Judge's 2017 rookie season, photomatched to one of his remarkable 52 home runs, closing at $51,240.
The auction also saw significant sales in memorabilia, such as the 2017 National Treasures Patrick Mahomes RPA #77/99 fetching $95,770, an Orange Refractor of Shohei Ohtani from 2018 Bowman selling for $74,450, and a game-used Mariano Rivera jersey from 1996, photomatched to eight trading cards, reaching $51,240. Vintage collectors were not left behind, with a 1969 Topps Football Series 1 wax box selling for $32,940 and its Series 2 counterpart going for $31,721.
