Rare Signed Photo of Ruth and Gehrig by Arthur Hull up for Auction

In the world of baseball memorabilia, there are certain items that hold a special place due to their historical significance and the stories they tell. One such item is a recently discovered photograph of baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, signed by the duo themselves and authenticated as an original Type 1 piece. This extraordinary artifact, captured by renowned photographer Arthur Hull, offers a glimpse into the golden age of baseball and the lives of two iconic figures.

Arthur Hull was celebrated for his work with The New York Times and The Associated Press, and this photograph is a testament to his talent and the bond he had with his subjects. Taken between 1927 and 1931 at the Yankees’ spring training camp, the photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and joy between Ruth and Gehrig. The level of care with which they signed the photograph reflects Hull’s dedication to his craft and his ability to capture the essence of these legendary players.

Keith Breitweiser, an acquisitions specialist at Lelands, the auction house handling the sale, highlights the exceptional quality of both the autographs and the photograph itself. He remarks, “These are the two most iconic players who ever played the game on the most iconic team. The autographs are some of the nicest you’ll find.” The meticulous preservation of this photograph showcases the significance it holds in the world of sports memorabilia.

The path this photograph has taken to reach the auction block is one of historical preservation and serendipity. After Hull’s passing in 1969, his collection, including this signed photograph, was acquired by Karl Allison and a friend from Hull’s widow. The acquisition, made for a small sum, included a vast array of negatives and photographs from Hull’s career spanning five decades. Among these treasures was the signed photograph of Ruth and Gehrig, which Allison chose to keep safe, storing it away from light while creating a duplicate for display.

The significance of this photograph extends far beyond its visual appeal. It presents a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to own a piece of sports history. Signed photographs of Ruth and Gehrig, especially those authenticated as Type 1 originals and in excellent condition, are incredibly scarce and highly sought after by collectors. As a result, the upcoming auction starting on February 25 is anticipated to attract considerable interest, providing a unique chance to acquire a tangible piece of baseball’s illustrious past.

The forthcoming auction not only underscores the enduring fascination with Ruth and Gehrig but also emphasizes the importance of meticulous preservation and the role of photography in capturing and commemorating the legends of the sport. As this photograph prepares to find a new home, it continues to celebrate the legacy of two of baseball’s most revered figures. Immortalized by Arthur Hull’s lens and preserved over the decades, it stands as a testament to the monumental impact Ruth and Gehrig had on the game and American culture as a whole.

Don’t miss out on this extraordinary opportunity to own a piece of baseball history. Bid on this rare signed photograph of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig by Arthur Hull and become a custodian of their enduring legacy.
