Red Auerbach’s Celtics Memorabilia: A Piece of Basketball History

Legendary coach Red Auerbach, the mastermind behind the Boston Celtics’ dominant run of nine NBA championships in eleven years, continues to be a revered figure in the basketball community. Now, fans and collectors have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to own a part of his illustrious legacy. Heritage Auctions is currently hosting an auction featuring items from Auerbach’s most successful season, as well as personal memorabilia from his Hall of Fame career. This collection, consigned by the Auerbach family, includes standout items that will be part of the prestigious Platinum Night event.

One of the key highlights of this auction is Auerbach’s 1965 NBA championship ring, which symbolizes the Celtics’ remarkable season under his guidance. With an impressive record of 62-18, this team showcased Auerbach’s coaching prowess. Alongside the ring, there are also Auerbach’s Coach of the Year Award and his personal league championship trophy from the same season. These trophies represent the pinnacle of his coaching achievements. Collectors anticipate that the 1965 championship ring alone might fetch around $80,000, while the Coach of the Year award and league championship trophy are also expected to attract significant interest.

Another noteworthy item up for auction is the ring Auerbach received as the general manager of the Celtics’ 1984 championship team. This particular ring is anticipated to fetch upwards of $100,000. As the mastermind behind the Celtics’ success, Auerbach left an indelible legacy on the organization. This ring represents the culmination of his front office endeavors.

The 1965 championship season holds historical significance beyond just the Celtics’ record. Auerbach made a groundbreaking decision that season by starting five African-American players, a first in NBA history. This brave and pioneering move had a profound impact on the sport and forever changed the dynamics of the game. In 1996, the team was rightfully recognized as one of the NBA’s ten greatest teams of all time. The 1965 championship ring and trophy carry respective pre-sale estimates of $80,000 and $30,000, while the Coach of the Year award is also expected to garner significant interest due to its historical significance.

In addition to championship rings and trophies, the auction also features more personal items that offer a glimpse into Auerbach’s life. One such item is a 1940s Washington Capitols team jacket, likely worn by Auerbach during his early coaching days. This jacket carries the unique distinction of being both vintage and signed by Auerbach himself. Another interesting item in the auction is a collection of Auerbach’s smoking pipes, complete with a stand and humidor. These items add a personal touch to the memorabilia being offered.

Other notable lots in the auction include two signed 1960-61 team photos, a 1981 Celtics championship watch, autographed photos of Auerbach with Bill Russell, a 1960s photo of Bob Cousy signed to Auerbach, and various championship rings and jewelry pieces given to his wife and family.

This auction follows a previous sale of Red Auerbach items in 2011, continuing the opportunity for enthusiasts to own a piece of basketball history. Bids for these rare and historic items will conclude on Friday, February 25, providing a unique chance for collectors and fans to celebrate the legacy of one of the NBA’s most revered figures.
