Rare 1928 Greiner’s Bread Baseball Cards Up for Auction

In a stroke of luck that could only come from the annals of baseball history, a striking discovery has emerged in the form of seven baseball cards from the 1928 Greiner’s Bread series. The upcoming Heritage Auctions’ Spring Sports Card Catalog sale will feature these rare cards, originally distributed by a Pennsylvania bakery nearly a century ago. The cards not only provide a fascinating glimpse into the past of baseball memorabilia but also pay tribute to the enduring impact of the sport’s early heroes.

Within this remarkable collection lie some true gems, including the top two highest-graded cards of Hall of Famers Edd Roush and George Kelly, each boasting a pristine PSA 4 rating. These cards hold both historical and sentimental value, not just for their impeccable condition but also for the narrative they weave about two players who were once traded for one another in the late 1920s. The ensemble is further enriched by cards featuring legends like Lou Gehrig, Gabby Hartnett, Goose Goslin, and Bob O’Farrell, all graded at PSA 2, with O’Farrell immortalized for his standout performance in the 1926 World Series. Additionally, a George Uhle card, graded at PSA 1, adds a touch of mystique to this already illustrious collection.

The 1928 Greiner’s Bread cards stand out for their distinctive design, which incorporates the player’s name and card number in a clean rectangular box on the front. This unique feature sets them apart from similar contemporaries like the W502 strip cards and the 1927 E210 York Caramel set, showcasing the attention to detail and creativity of the era’s marketing strategies. The cards not only serve as collectibles but also as relics of a time when baseball fever ran high, particularly in Pennsylvania where the Greiner bakery operated.

As the anticipation mounts leading up to the auction, enthusiasts and collectors alike are buzzing with excitement over the fate of these Greiner’s Bread cards, with particular focus on the highly sought-after Lou Gehrig card. Gehrig’s card, in particular, is a standout piece, symbolizing a season where the iconic player displayed his unmatched skill and resilience on the baseball field, leaving an indelible mark on the sport’s history.

Delving deeper into the backstory, the Greiner Bakery Co.’s legacy adds another layer of intrigue to these cards, tracing its origins back to the 19th century in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Known for its innovative marketing campaigns, such as the baseball card giveaway, the bakery played a significant role in shaping the community’s appreciation for both baked goods and the beloved sport of baseball, cementing its place in local lore.

With the auction day drawing near, excitement is palpable as collectors prepare to engage in spirited bidding wars over these precious relics of baseball history. The allure of the Gehrig and Goslin cards, which have already garnered considerable interest, serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of baseball legends and the fans who cherish their memories. Through events like this auction, the legacy of these players and the fervor of the crowds that cheered them on are kept alive, ensuring that their stories continue to resonate with fans both old and new.
