Pre-War Baseball Treasures Auctioned for Scholarships

In a rather nostalgic nod to America’s favorite pastime, an extensive and remarkable collection of pre-war baseball memorabilia and vintage comics will soon go under the hammer at Paul McInnis Auctioneers in North Hampton, NH. This isn’t just any auction—it’s one with a noble purpose. All proceeds from the event will bolster the University of New Hampshire’s Scholarship Fund, a fitting tribute to the educational legacy of the collection’s late owner, Harry W. O’Brien of Manchester, NH.

The lore of the collection begins with Daniel O’Brien, Harry’s father, who, during his time in the military service spanning both World Wars, began amassing a treasure trove of baseball cards and comics. This passion was lovingly preserved and expanded by his son, culminating in the extraordinary assortment soon to be offered to the highest bidders.

Amongst the gems of the collection are 300 T206 cards, including pristine representations of 48 Hall of Famers such as Christie Mathewson and Cy Young, evoking the early dazzle of baseball legends. The auction also spotlights a complete set of 1911 T201 Mecca Folders and 80 Goudey cards from the 1930s featuring titans like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Vintage Philadelphia Caramels cards and 19 4-in-1 Exhibit cards are also on the list, showcasing Ruth and Gehrig in their prime.

Moreover, the scope of the auction extends beyond the diamond. It features 1910 T218 Mecca boxing cards that celebrate the prowess of legendary heavyweight Jack Johnson, alongside a rich assortment of vintage non-sports cards. Most of these cards have been professionally graded by SGC, ensuring their pristine condition and authenticating their value.

But the intrigue doesn’t stop there. The auction will appeal to comic book enthusiasts as well, with high-grade 1940s issues featuring the iconic Superman and Batman. These comics represent a golden era of American pop culture and are expected to draw significant attention and competitive bidding.

Adding a historic flavor to an already captivating event, rare ticket stubs from monumental events, including the inaugural game at Fenway Park in 1912, will also be up for grabs. With such a diverse array of over 500 lots, the auction is poised to be a field day for collectors and enthusiasts aiming to own a piece of history.

Bidders have the convenience of joining the auction frenzy early with pre-bidding currently open. However, the crescendo of the event is set for a live virtual webcast, scheduled on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM via the Paul McInnis website. This not only enriches the experience for the collectors involved but also provides a unique opportunity for supporters and fans of the University of New Hampshire to contribute towards enriching its scholarship fund.

This auction promises a rich, nostalgic journey through sports history, encapsulated in a collection that goes beyond mere memorabilia to become artifacts of cultural significance. The event not only pays homage to the personal legacy of the O’Brien family but also extends a helping hand to the future scholars of the University of New Hampshire. A splendid occasion where history, nostalgia, and philanthropy converge seamlessly, making it more than just an auction—it’s a celebration of heritage and hope.
